Art in the Garden Logo

Sharyn Dahn

A contemporary artist, working in watercolor and acrylic, I've developed a style reflecting my love of color and abstract contemporary design. I look for colors in each object or scene, not seen by everyone but clearly visible to me. I first took this approach to my painting whlle summering on Appledore Island, Isles Of Shoals, Maine. Painting the rocky coast, visiting Celia Thaxter's Garden, and seeing the multitude of colors in the rocks has prepared me to do the same in my recent interests; the tropical setting I winter in and the scenery I see on my travels.

When I begin a painting I start with a color thumbnail sketch. I work out the color placement in these preliminary sketches before moving on to the final work. I work in layers of paint until I achieve the color and feeling of the setting. While each layer is still wet I scumble the paint with a multi toothed, rubber tool, blending the layers of paint as I go. In most of my paintings I have worked with at least 5 layers of paint to get the desired effect.

My work is in local and international collections.
